Inflation’s Long Shadow Over Rates
Inflation has lost some of its heat, but not enough to comfort central bankers. A projected 3.6% rise in Social Security benefits for 2027 suggests that prices are still climbing faster than households would like. Higher food, rent, and medical costs keep pressure on the Federal Reserve to hold interest rates high, even as growth shows signs of fatigue.
The problem is partly psychological. Once workers, retirees, and firms expect prices to rise, they adjust wages, contracts, and prices in advance. That can make inflation more stubborn than official forecasts suggest. For consumers, the effect is simple: paychecks stretch less far. For businesses, borrowing remains costly, delaying investment in equipment, hiring, and expansion.
Markets now face an awkward trade-off. If the Fed cuts rates too soon, inflation expectations may revive. If it waits too long, unemployment could edge higher and debt-heavy firms may struggle. The most likely path is caution: fewer dramatic moves, more data watching, and a slower return to the low-rate world investors once took for granted.
